Chapter Ten

Dennis screamed, “Ragnon!” as he jumped to his feet.

He stared across the field at his mate in horror. The male lay on the ground, unmoving. Dennis’s heart pounded frantically, threatening to break free from his chest. Scared and desperate to get to Ragnon, Dennis didn’t think twice. He jumped over the stone barrier and started running toward his mate. The only thing that mattered was getting to Ragnon. He had to make sure that the male was okay.

“Dennis!” Gogrek shouted behind him.

Even though Dennis heard his name, he didn’t stop. He couldn’t. A horn blared, echoing throughout the stadium, and everything stopped. When the players saw Dennis on the field, they moved away from him. No one tried to prevent him from getting to Ragnon. Dropping to his knees beside his mate, Dennis pressed his hands against the deepest gash, trying to stop the bleeding.

“Oh God,” he panted, fear nearly choking him. “Ragnon.”

Ragnon cringed as he sat up. The male reached out and grabbed ahold of the leash, wrapping it securely around his fist.

“What are you doing on the field, pet?”

Dennis swallowed hard, worried that he’d done something wrong. “I…I thought…”

“Dennis!” Gogrek called out.

Glancing over his shoulder, Dennis watched as Gogrek strode toward him, a concerned look etched onto the male’s face. What the hell am I doing? His concern for Ragnon’s well-being had overruled all logical thought. Now he felt silly for overreacting. Ragnon didn’t need Dennis to rescue him. The male was a warrior. He could take care of himself.

“I’m sorry,” Dennis murmured. “I was worried about you.”

Ragnon chuckled lightly. “It’s all part of the game, pet.”

Dennis removed his hands from the wound and stared at his bloody palms. It’s just a game. He started to pull away, but Ragnon didn’t let him get far. The male wrapped his arms around Dennis and pulled him in close, holding him.

“Thank you for worrying about me, pet,” he whispered.

Dennis melted in Ragnon’s arms, relieved the male wasn’t upset. For a moment, he’d been worried, unsure how Ragnon and Gogrek would react. The male rose to his feet, taking Dennis with him.

Ragnon handed the leash to Gogrek. “Watch him.”

Ragnon patted the top of Dennis’s head. To others, the gesture might be considered condescending. But Dennis knew that Ragnon was showing him affection.

“Let’s go back to our seats, pet.”

Dennis glanced at Gogrek and nodded. Together, they walked off the field. As soon as they were seated, a horn blared, and the game started as if Dennis had never interrupted.

“Hold out your hands,” Gogrek said.

Dennis obeyed immediately. Gogrek turned his body to face Dennis. The male grabbed a piece of fabric and started removing Ragnon’s blood. Gogrek didn’t say anything, and Dennis wondered if the male was angry with him.

“I’m sorry,” Dennis told him. “I was worried about Ragnon, but I should’ve listened to you. It was dangerous for me to go out there on the field like that and I…”

“You love him,” Gogrek said, interrupting Dennis’s longwinded apology.

Dennis stiffened. You love him.
